BCRA > Publications > Cave Science Indexes

A cumulative index to all BCRA's science publications has been compiled to aid workers in searching and making use of the large volume of material that has now been published. In addition, indexes to the publications of BCRA's predecessor organisations, the BSA and the CRG, have been produced in a similar format. BCRA's peer-reviewed science journal is currently published under the title of Cave & Karst Science

The indexes are viewable online as a set of 'pre-sorted' files in Author and Subject order. You can also do your own active search by following the appropriate link below. Finally, please note that the Cave Science index is available on paper in two volumes, as described below. The UIS publication Speleological Abstracts is also an important source of information for researchers; as are the publications of BCRA's Special Interest Groups.

On-line Indexes
bullet Indexes to Cave Science Journals (BCRA, CRG, BSA, UBSS & WPCST)
The main Cave Science index includes the publications of BCRA and its predecessors, CRG and BSA; and the publications of William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust. In this form, the index is also available on paper (see below). The online version includes a draft index to the Proceedings of the University of Bristol Spelæological Society, added in October 2002.

bullet Indexes to BCRA Special Interest Group Journals
We have begun working on the publications of BCRA's Special Interest Groups. An index to the Cave Surveying Group's journal Compass Points (ISSN 1361-8962) was added in March 2004 and we are now working on an index to the Cave Radio and Electronics Group's Journal (ISSN 1361-4800). A draft version of this is now available.

  bullet Indexes to Mining History
An index to the Bulletin of the Peak District Mines Historical Society was added in October 2004. There are also many references to Mine Exploration and Mining History in the earlier journal of the British Speleological Association, 'Cave Science' (see above).

bullet Contents List for BCRA's news magazine
The BCRA Bulletin (from 1973) was re-titled Caves & Caving (1979-2002; ISSN 0142-1832), and then Speleology (from 2003; ISSN 1478-999X). A contents list for Speleology and C&C (issues from 1995) is available on-line.

bullet Contents List for BCRA's science journal
The Transactions of the British Cave Research Association (1974-1982; ISSN 0305-859X) was re-titled Cave Science (1982-1993; ISSN 0263-760X), and then Cave and Karst Science (from 1994; ISSN 1356-191X). A contents list from March 1995 is available on-line (it is not particulalry complete at the moment, but we're working on it). A searchable index to all issues is available by clicking on the "Index to Cave Science journals" link above.

  Credits
The main cave science indexes indexes were first compiled by Peter Cousins and Graham Mullan. The indexes to Compass Points, the CREG Journal and the PDMHS Bulletin were based on earlier work by Chris Trayner, David Gibson and Dave Williams respectively. The online search engine was written in Perl by Derek Cousins; this provides the basis for a full Author-, Subject- and Title-searching facility across all the journals.
